Dr Alim’s photo show ‘The Wings of Vibrance’ draws huge crowd

A display of 89 vivid photographs of birds of 65 species captured by a doctor-turned- photographer has drawn huge crowds at the Edge Gallery in Dhaka.

The two-day exhibition that ended on December 25 was the first solo display of Dr. Abdus Samad Alim’s (Emu) photography. Photography clubs of different universities and colleges showed interest to take the exhibition at their campuses.

Ambassador of South Korea to Bangladesh Lee Jeong Kyun inaugurated the exhibition styled ‘The Wings of Vibrance’. Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni launched a book with those pictures, titled ‘The Wings of Vibrance Volume –1’, on the closing day.

According to organizers, the exhibition attracted over 2,500 visitors – photographers, students, professionals, teachers, and doctors.

Dr Alim, a clinical neurologist and businessman by profession, is a man of many talents. He is an avid photographer at heart.

Academically bright, Dr Alim finished his schooling from the St. Joseph’s High School, followed by Dhaka College and then earned his undergraduate degree from the Dhaka Medical College. He completed his post-graduation from the University College London, UK.

His love for nature and travelling was ingrained in him from a very early age.

His late father, Prof Abdul Alim, was the chairman of the forestry department in the University of Chattogram and the chief conservator of the Forests of Bangladesh back in the early 80s. So, he would often accompany him to visit various beautiful natural landmarks and locations.

His father used to say to him, “If you love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”

His interest in photography grew after being inspired by his daughter.

“In 2011, my daughter took a photography course in school. Then I bought my daughter a camera, and after seeing her for a few days, I too became interested in photography. Since then I have started wildlife photography, especially bird photography,” Dr Alim said.

He captured those images at various places in Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Thailand, and Singapore.

Creating awareness about birds amongst the youth was also an objective of the exhibition and the book he published.
